Driving the Alsace wine route from Belfort

Why Belfort works

Most visitors sleep in Colmar or Strasbourg and work the route in one line. From Belfort you reach it in 55 minutes by motorway, and you arrive from the south — Eguisheim first, where the wine route begins.

Belfort answers another question too. The Jura and its under-veil wines sit 1 h 20 away; the Côte de Beaune is a little over two hours. One base, three regions, no hotel change each evening.

The order of the villages

Start in the south: Eguisheim in the morning, its lanes circling the castle, then the road north to Riquewihr through the hills. Colmar for dinner, its canals quiet once the day crowds leave.

The next day, stay south of Colmar: Kaysersberg and the Schlossberg vineyard climbing right above the castle. Then the hilltop crus around Husseren-les-Châteaux, three castle ruins on one ridge. The drive back to Belfort is 55 minutes.

Tasting as a couple

Two people, one car: one drives, the other tastes. The domaines know it — spit buckets sit on the counter, and most will pour the range for whoever is drinking. Another answer is to stay the night.

Some domaines receive by appointment only — Zind-Humbrecht on the slope above Turckheim should be arranged a few days ahead. The village cellars welcome walk-ins. The carnets name them, with their opening days.

What it costs

The “Alsace in 2 days” carnet costs €29, once: every address, drive time and table, already ordered, readable on your phone and as a PDF.

If you would rather sleep among the vines, the sejour bundles the carnet with nights at Les Capucins, our hotel and restaurant in Belfort. It costs about €150 a night for two, breakfast included.

What you give up, honestly

Sleeping in Colmar each night puts the vines next to the bed, but you pack and unpack daily and leave the car outside. From Belfort, you add 55 minutes of driving at each end of the day.

A private driver takes the wheel off you for about €600 a day; a free blog lists the villages and leaves the stitching to you. The carnet holds the middle position: you drive, everything else is worked out.
